Estimating Drill Size For Taps

To determine the ideal drill size for appx. 75% thread on inch-sized (imperial) special pitch taps, use the following formula:

Drill Size = (Major Diameter of the tap) - (.975 divided by the number of Threads Per Inch)

For example, to find the ideal drill size needed for a 8-40 tap:

Drill Size = (0.164") - (.975 / 40 tpi)

Drill Size = .164" - (.975 / 40)

Drill Size = .164" - .0244"

Drill Size = .1396"

I might use a 9/64 drill.

0.1396" x 64 = 8.936/64ths", or approximately 9/64".

If I had metric drills, I might use a 3,55 mm drill.

0.1396" x 25.4 mm/inch = 3,546 mm.
